October

The third trimester is flying by! Babyjinx is growing like crazy and doing great! October was filled with visiting friends, baby showers, and NESTING! The nursery is now complete and stocked, thanks to the generosity of all of my coworkers, our friends, and family! Melissa, Kris, and Sarah hosted a wonderful shower for me at 34 weeks.

Now we're just waiting for Babyjinx's grand arrival. Below is the belly at 35-1/2 weeks.

Mike LARPS and gets a beat-down!

Today we went to Chris and Val's house for Grace's 7th birthday party. It was a Star Wars theme complete with light sabers and a Jabba the Hut bean bag toss for all of the kids. Mike dressed up as Darth Vader.

It was quite a sight! I'm pretty sure Mike had more fun than all of the kids put together!

Now where were we??

Whew! It's been a busy month! Over Labor Day weekend, Mike and I decided to take an impromptu trip to the Lake of the Ozarks for a little R & R. We stayed at the Lodge of Four Seasons (where we got married) and enjoyed some swimming, shopping, and general relaxation. We were ecstatic when we stopped by The Sugar Loft and the nice lady who made our wedding cake offered to make us up some cupcakes that were tiny replicas of our wedding cake. YUM! We literally made ourselves sick on wedding cupcakes!

Monday evenings this month have been dedicated to childbirth classes, which we both have found VERY helpful. So far, we've learned about pregnancy discomforts, labor and delivery, relaxation exercises, and breathing techniques. I think Mike was pretty shocked at the labor and delivery part and the amount of work that will be required from him to be a good labor coach. I have no doubt that he'll be AWESOME.

I am now going for my OB visits every two weeks. I've generally been feeling pretty good aside from the typical fatigue and swollen feet and ankles, so the visits are quick. Next week I'll have another ultrasound for growth and at 31 weeks, I'm expecting the baby to be close to 4 pounds now.

Mike's work had their annual company picnic at the KC Zoo a couple of weekends ago. It was a super fun day, but unfortunately it was a little hot and my feet and legs were ginormously swollen which made walking around a little unpleasant. We had lunch and took the train around to see what animals we could see and called it a day. My favorite part was watching the sea lions...my least favorite part was my belly not being able to fit into the train car! Ugh!

On 9/19/09, our very good friends Chris and Val had their little baby boy, Cael. Both mom and baby are happy and healthy. Mike and I got to hold little Cael before he was 24 hours old, which was good practice for when our little one arrives. We still have to work on the diaper changing training, though. Cael and our baby will be about 2 months apart in age and will be great buddies!

The following Sunday, Mike and I hosted a Chiefs vs. Raiders party at our house. It was our first time entertaining in the new house and we had over 20 guests. It was a LOT of fun to get everybody together in one place. The kids had a great time testing out the swingset in back, but poor Minnie and Sweet Pea were traumatized for about 3 days from all of the commotion!
Last week, we visited our baby's pediatrican's office for a tour and a general run-down on how the practice works. We both got a really good vibe from the office and luckily, it's really close by. We also found a super cozy rocker/recliner for the baby's room. I think I'm going to have to booby-trap it so that Mike doesn't take it over! Two more things checked off of the pre-baby to-do list!

We ATTEMPTED to have a 3-D ultrasound, but our baby was not in a great position for scanning so we hardly got any recognizable images. We were able to see that the baby has HAIR! Below is the best face shot that we got.

Baby Jinx Cooperates

FINALLY....some cooperation for a snapshot!Welcome to the third trimester! Today was our 28 week growth scan and BabyJinx is growing like crazy, weighing in at 2 lbs, 7 oz. Last week I passed the gestational diabetes screening test (Yay!) and tomorrow I'll have my monthly OB appointment. BabyJinx is really active now and strong enough that we can actually see the kicks, punches, and tumbles from the outside. I'm still feeling pretty great. I'm not sleeping quite as well (achy hips, leg cramps, and trips to the bathroom about every 2 hours), but overall, very little to complain about!

We had a great visit over the weekend with our good friends Trish and Jay and their two super-cute daughters Alexandria and Madeleine. I scored tons of great mom-to-be advice! Thanks, Treeosh!

Next projects: start a baby registry and shop for a rocker for the baby's room....

Mao-Mao's Trip to the Vet

Yesterday was the Mao-Mao's annual trip to the Vet for vaccinations and a check-up. Minnie does great, she's been to the vet for various treatments and tests so going in for her shots is not a big deal for her. Sweet Pea had always been fine up until visiting a new vet in Cincinnati several years ago and for no apparent reason she completely freaked out, trying to scratch and bite the vet. He ended up having to put on these leather gloves that went clear up to his shoulders (similar to the gloves that falcon handlers use!) in order to give her her shots. Doing any kind of exam was impossible! I think this must have traumatized poor Sweet Pea because she has been a holy terror at the vet ever since!
Last year at Sweet Pea's visit to the vet, she had to be taken to the back room and immobilized to get her shots. She ended up scratching the crap out of the vet with her back claws. We were instructed not to bring her back unless she was pretty much dying. This earned her a note in her chart "EXTREME CAUTION". Apparently this is vet-speak for "watch out everybody, this cat is a complete maniac".

Yesterday Sweet Pea saw a new vet and we tried a different tactic this time...put Sweet Pea in an anesthesia chamber minus the anesthesia, cover her up with a thick blanket, and hold her down with the strength of a Norse woodsman while the vet went for her rump with the shot.

This worked great---for about three seconds until Sweet Pea decided to become a catapult (no pun intended) and somehow kicked up her back legs, shot her back end out of the box and in the commotion caused the vet to stab herself in the arm with the needle. You wouldn't think a fluffy 10 pound cat that LOVES to be petted and sit on our laps could go that crazy. Poor Mike witnessed the whole thing and was horrified, I'm sure.

The vet told us we should get ourselves a trout fishing net to wrangle, wrap up, and immobilize her next time; not to worry, once Sweet Pea turned 10 years old, she would mellow out. Umm...sorry lady, Sweet Pea's already 12+ and showing no signs of slowing down.

Baby Jinx update!

I had an ultrasound to check BabyJinx's growth last week. At 24 weeks, baby is growing well and getting big...1-1/2 pounds! The pregnancy is flying by! The next big step is passing the glucose challenge testing for gestational diabetes at 27 weeks; wish us luck!

From the start, this little one has not wanted to cooperate for good ultrasound pictures; BabyJinx is on the move constantly! Here's the best facial shot that we could get.
